Denton, MD —

A Trail Town Since April 2025

Denton, Maryland, is a small center for trade and governmental center in an area with a rich agricultural base. It’s also home to the first Walmart for through-hikers on their way from Delaware to points west and close to Tuckahoe State Park, which has a dedicated three-sided shelter for ADT hikers.

All the photos below were taken from the trail in April 2025.

Denton is a lovely small town of about 5,000 people about 75 miles east of Washington, DC and about 50 miles from Cape Henlopen, the east coast starting point for the American Discovery Trail.

On the Delmarva Peninsula about halfway between Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, Denton was established in the 1770s, but Native Americans had passed through and lived in the area for centuries, as a shallow spot in the river made for an easy crossing. The Caroline County Court first met in Denton in 1773.
