Have you done the whole trail or a portion of it?

Millions of people have walked the trail, but only a small number have done the entire coast-to-coast route. Our long distance travelers can request a certificate, a patch, or other types of recognition. We also are seeking stories from your journey and its impact on you and your community that we can share with the broader community.

Going the distance includes (1) those who travel for weeks or months on end on foot, bike or horse, (2) those who are section hikers and do segments as time allows, and (3) those who do the same portion of the trail again and again because they love the route.

Thus, to get 1,000 miles:

  • one person might ride their bike across two central states,

  • another might do five backpacking trips of 200 miles over a period of several years,

  • while the third lives just off the American Discovery Trail and regularly does 10-mile runs on the trail — and they do it 100 times to get to 1,000 miles!

  • On the Way.

An outdoor adventure of 500 or 5,000 miles is a commitment. However, many people are regularly doing 2-10 miles in their local community, be it biking, running, walking or even unicycling!

A long-distance traveler sees the sites once as they pass by, while the local user is able to see the progression of the seasons. What’s your motivation?
