ABOUT US
The American Discovery Trail Society is the steward of a new breed of national trail — part urban, part small town, part forest, part mountains, part desert — all in one trail. The thousands of miles of trail stretch from Delaware to California. Created in 1990, this trail reaches across America, linking community to community in the first coast to coast, non-motorized trail. Over the decades, the trail and the Society have given people from across America and the world the opportunity to journey into the heart of all that is uniquely American — its culture, heritage, landscape and spirit.
The American Discovery Trail (ADT) incorporates numerous local, state, and national trails, with most of them designed for walking, hiking, and running and for bicycle and equestrian use. It connects scores of nationally-recognized scenic and historic trails, national parks and forests plus thousands of state and local properties of historic, cultural and natural significance. Users can experience the local ecosystem, or the 23 ecosystems the national trail passes through - deserts, mountains, forests, waterfronts, and plains.
The ADT Society and the trail are all about connections. We provide the opportunity for the most adventurous to travel from coast to coast, truly discovering the heart of America. Equally important it provides tens of millions of people access to a trail system that improves their local quality of life while protecting natural resources and also boosting local tourism.
Whether you set out for two hours, two days, two weeks, two months or more, your experiences on the trail will be memorable. Nothing refreshes the human spirit more than being in touch with the outdoors. Coast to coast is about 5,000 miles, so two weekends of 12.5 miles a day — or a one-day 50 mile bike ride - is 1% of the trail distance.
