Trail Towns
General Information About the Trail Town Program
The American Discovery Trail (ADT) is the only coast-to-coast, non-motorized trail that connects people with diverse landscapes—mountains, prairies, deserts, forests, and oceans. But just as important as the natural beauty are the communities along the way.
The Trail Town Initiative recognizes municipalities that support outdoor recreation and promote the ADT. This program designates Trail Towns—villages, towns, and cities of any size located on or near the trail—as part of a growing network working to expand access to outdoor recreation and boost community visibility.
Why Become a Trail Town?
Designated Trail Towns benefit from:
Increased tourism and outdoor recreation opportunities
Healthier, more active communities
A stronger local economy through trail-related businesses
Enhanced quality of life and community pride
Trail users are more likely to visit towns that officially welcome them—places where they can rest, resupply, and enjoy the local hospitality.
What’s Involved?
Participation is free. The ADT does not require land purchases or assume maintenance responsibilities. Towns may choose to invest in low-cost amenities—like trail signs or visitor kiosks—to better serve hikers, cyclists, and other users.
